The Friday Five

1. Have you ever been to summer camp?

No. Not the traditional idea of a summer camp. However, my family would spend the whole summer at our camp on the lake.

2. Have you ever made a s'more?

Yes, and still do. Not quite the same made in the microwave though.

3. Have you ever slept under the stars (no tent/tarp)?

Yes, as a kid. My cousin and I decided it would be a great idea. We made homemade hammocks-the kind only a kid could love- under the apple trees. In the morning, I woke up face-to-face with a cow. Goodness, I haven't thought about that in years.

4. Have you ever had a member of the opposite sex sleep over at your house?

Yes. My husband was the opposite sex. (that sounds so weird to type it out like that)

5. What type of bed do you have (queen, twin, bunk, etc.)?

Queen with a brand new mattress. I just replaced the old one a week ago.

The Internet Archive was down for about 7 hours yesterday, due to a power outage in San Francisco. Of course, there are conspiracy theories smh. They should invest in some backup servers elsewhere.

[personal profile] sovay recced Gwynne Garfinkle's The Last Word, a poem about the 1935 film Mad Love.

Laridian on Pillowfort posted an assortment of couple photos from the first half of the 20th century (het warning, lol). They make for great pose references.

Ethel Vance's Escape, which I heard is worse then the film. Boy.

Helen McInnes's Above Suspicion, and it appears good ol' Hassie is a movie-only character :(

J. Storer Clouston's The Spy in Black, which does not have the Pressburger touch, but I quite liked the first chapter. Simple, but it paints the picture nicely.

Or, rather, what Astro's just finished listening to, not counting a couple of long Q&A wrap-up episodes, because I literally just finished it a few minutes ago, and I do not know when I will recover.

So, TMA fans, horror aficionados, podcast peeps, you've... you've all already listened to The Silt Verses, right? I mean, surely, right? Because I can't really remember anyone talking about it, except maybe very briefly in passing, but I know it finished up a year ago and maybe I just wasn't paying attention before I very belatedly started listening to it. It still seems sort of astonishing to me, though, because my main reaction to the whole thing is pretty much, "OMG, why isn't the title of this thing on everyone's lips? Why haven't they made up entirely new awards just to give them all to this show?!!!"

Because, geez, you've got top-notch, deeply affecting horror. You've got fantastic characters, complex and flawed and evolving. You've got exceptional worldbuilding, with possibly the best take on the idea that gods are created by humans and need worship and sacrifice to survive that I've ever seen, and, yes, I am not even excluding Sir Terry Pratchett there. You've got incredibly good voice acting. Well, all, right, there's a place or two where you listen to some of the minor characters and think, whelp, those were some acting choices, for sure. But the main cast are incredible, especially Méabh de Brún, who really should just get handed All the Awards Ever. You've got fantastic writing and fantastic production values that work hand in hand, and a format that really, really works for me, blending internal narrative, dialog, and soundscaping a in a way that artfully and artistically conveys to the listener everything we need to know. Which is incredibly important for me as someone whose suspension of disbelief goes SPROING the instant a character starts narrating their own movements out loud or describing things everyone with them can see perfectly well.

And it's incredibly meaty, with themes involving faith, corruption, war, politics, death and how we meet it, ambition, the legacies we leave behind, the difference between reality and the stories we tell about it afterward, capitalism, exploitation, love, defiance, hope, betrayal, cruelty, kindness, the near-impossibility of changing systems when you're bound up inside them, and undoubtedly a whole bunch of other things.

Oh, and if I'm making this post a pitch for those who haven't listened to it yet, I'll first add content warnings for darkness and horror and lots of disturbing stuff. But I'll then add, because I know there are a lot you out there for whom it's likely to be a serious selling point, that this thing has two canonically trans main characters (whose stories are incredibly complex and deep and have nothing whatsoever to do with their gender), that a significant percentage of the people we encounter casually, use they/them pronouns, and that while (rather refreshingly) the show entirely avoids romance tropes when exploring the ways in which the characters love each other, there are certainly queer relationships to be found in the background.

So, yeah. Fantastic stuff. My eyes are still kind of bothering me from how much the final episode made me cry, not gonna lie. I also find that I can't stop thinking about how, to put it without spoilers, the two-part finale here had a surprising number of elements in common with last week's Doctor Who season finale, despite being a very different kinds of storytelling, and, boy, does it say something that one of those two things left me going, "Ugh, OK, whatever, I guess?" at the end, and the other made me cry a lot and then write a rambling Dreamwidth post about it.

I do find, though, that this seems to be one of those things were I don't want fic and fannish stuff for it, because it's super satisfying to me as it is, and I don't want to mess with it at all. Hey, maybe that's the reason, actually, that it doesn't get the kind of attention TMA does, who knows?

So I woke up yesterday evening to the announcement of the long-awaited Final Fantasy Tactics remaster and after all this time, I find I'm kind of mixed feelings about it? Or maybe more accurately, I don't feel as much as I expected/would like to?

But then I can already play multiple iterations of FFT, and also this doesn't look like it's getting half the attention Tactics Ogre Reborn did (just the Collector's Box merch -- which had already sold out by maybe 1am my time last night), and something tastes bad about this finally turning up now that Squenix has basically admitted they're going to be virtually a dead zone for ~2 years, an nuked their global mobile games, and ...

... And, yeah. I'll no doubt get this, but right now I can just play FFTWotL. Or FFTA2, more likely, grand glorious DS game that it is.

All of this, of course, while I'm trying to sort my FF issues and also push some small blocks into place for making my own FF, as well as some other things-related chewing on my brainstem, like:

- Dissidia. I want to poke at (a) Dissidia.
- similarly, a Theatrhythm. probably the first one, pretty sure that one had the dungeon setup I liked more.
- doing incredible violence to basically everything using mtl to read the FFIV novels.

Also I finally after decades have the other volumes of the tiny original FFIV sourcebooks on the way, including the setting book. So I can check that one translation against crazed mtl and see what my brain makes of it (also pictures. it will be nice to actually own the book with the Kain's white magic command screencap in it.)

Unrelated, I finally got a bloody fiction zine put together and made a post over on [community profile] makezines about it. Go me. Now keep doing that. Maybe by, oh, making that bloody FF zine.

My Google Alert on K-pop today included an article from The Korea Herald entitled "G-Dragon, Le Sserafim, Babymonster push on with overseas concerts amid COVID-19 surge in Asia". Since American news sources have gone radio silent on COVID, I ended up reading this article for infectious disease news rather than musical news. Here's the relevant part:

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) on Monday, countries including China, Thailand and Singapore have recently reported a notable increase in COVID-19 cases. While the situation in Korea remains relatively stable, the agency warned that a summer resurgence is possible due to international travel and regional outbreaks.

The NB.1.8.1 variant — now dominant in the affected countries — is known for its strong transmissibility and immune-evasive properties, although its severity and fatality rate remain relatively low. The KDCA is advising high-risk travelers to these countries to get vaccinated before departure.

Louisiana is at it again...

03/06/2025 08:39 am
brithistorian: (Default)
[personal profile] brithistorian

Pretty much every time I read a news story about Louisiana, I'm glad that I left Louisiana and am reinforced in my determination to never move back. Today is no exception: The Louisiana House has passed a bill banning chemtrails. You know, chemtrails? Those imaginary, thoroughly-debunked streams of chemicals that conspiracy theorists allege are sprayed from airplanes because they're too uninformed to understand the science behind contrails? Yeah, well, according to Louisiana legislators, those are no longer being used for mind control but instead are being used to control the weather, and Louisiana's not having it! (Because, of course, secret societies spreading chemicals through the air for nefarious ends are well known for their scrupulous adherence to state laws.)

On the bright side, they did at least have to foresight to include an exception stating that this law would not apply to "the injection, release, or dispersal of fire retardant or fire suppressant substances for purposes of extinguishing or suppressing fire, or to the aerial application of seeds, fertilizers, or pesticides for agriculture or forestry purposes." Of course, the exception would never have been necessary if they hadn't introduced their stupid law in the first place, so even the bright side isn't all that bright.

ETA: After Hurricane Katrina, A. and I did everything we could to convince her family not to return to New Orleans, but they insisted on going back. They don't seem happy to be there, and from time to time the idea of them moving will come up in conversation, but the combination of inertia and economics seems to have trapped them there. For the longest time A.'s mother would share any positive news story out of Louisiana, in an attempt to try to convince us to move back. She seems to have stopped doing that, but I don't know if this represents a change in her feelings about Louisiana or just an acknowledgement of the unlikelihood of changing our minds.

Today I got latest readership summary on my first master's thesis, on British educational policy, 1901-03. Apparently during the month of May, my thesis was download 10 times: Six times in Brazil and once each in Ecuador, Germany, the US, and Uzbekistan(?!). I wonder how many of those are going into training AI? (But like A. said "At least if they're using it for that, you know they're training the AI on something well-researched." Which is true — I spent hours sitting in the library reading Hansard's Parliamentary Debates on microform.)
